There is nothing more frustrating than the inability to sleep, even when you desperately want and need to. No matter how tired you are, it can often feel like an alarm goes off in your head the second you close your eyes.

The best and most effective way to battle insomnia is to closely examine the cause. This may be something as simple as looking into snoring solutions for your spouse or it may mean going so far as to looking to participating in a sleep study to determine the a true diagnosis. Once you discover the reason for your sleeplessness, you can take active steps to alleviate it.

Five steps to help you sleep.

Maintain a routine at bedtime in order to prepare yourself for sleep. Whatever the routine is, try not to deviate from it as the hope is that you will train your body and mind to be ready for sleep through repetition.

Set up your room in a manner that is conducive to sleep. Try to get rid of any distractions such as noise or light so that your room is calm quiet and dark.

If you can’t sleep because your spouse won’t stop snoring or tosses and turns in bed, consider going to bed about an hour before they do so that you are already asleep when they come to bed.

Don’t go to bed on an empty stomach and this doesn’t mean you should eat a giant plate of pasta before you turn in every night. A large glass of milk or a small bowl of yogurt or cereal should do the trick.

Avoid stimulants well before bedtime. Coffee, tea or pop have a great deal of caffeine in them so make sure that you don’t consume any at least 4 hours before you intend to sleep.

Recognizing why you have difficulty sleeping is always the best place to start trying to address the problem. Whether you exercise in the evening to tire yourself out or do yoga in order to put yourself in a calm and relaxed state, there are many options for you to look into. If the problem persists or begins to negatively impact your waking hours, you may need to look into a professional opinion or resolution such as medication. Either way, sleep is essential so making sure you get enough of it should be priority one.

Stress, new sleeping environment, changes in your daily work routine, these are few factors causing insomnia or the so-called “difficulty in sleeping”. Sometimes your body do the adjusting at night after your long-day work or perhaps adjusting to the new bedroom. Things like that could really get frustrating, when all you needed is a rest or sleep which cannot be granted.

Treating insomnia is same with all other syndrome. When your problem is simply the trouble of sleeping, then the first step is to trace personal and medical history, and deal with the causes of your problem. Insomnia can be a case-to-case basis. It could be categorized into three types according to duration: transient, acute and chronic insomnia. Although the causes for transient and acute are often similar, the level of disturbance is greater for short-term insomnia. Transient occurs in just less than a week while short-term could go for less than a month.

Transient and short-term insomnia factors are: stress, uncomfortable and or unusual sleeping environment, changes in the daily routine and acute medical illness. Chronic insomnia could last for a month or more. Its causes are more serious than the earlier mentioned, such as chronic medical illness, biological factors, psychophysiologic insomnia, sleep disordered breathing and the restless leg syndrome (RLS), usually being experienced by people having tedious work and then having that irritating tickling or pricking of the leg during the night. And other lifestyle factors such as caffeine intake could trigger chronic insomnia.

Taking Sleeping pills is a common information people have in order to treat insomnia but actually there are a variety of non-medical therapy effective in curing insomnia and is safer and better! This method includes:

#1: avoiding daily naps and developing a regular sleeping schedule

#2: avoid caffeine and nicotine which are stimulating substances, especially before going to bed

#3: avoid alcohol which is a cause of poor sleep

#4: have a daily exercise during the day and not in the evening for a more sleep-conditioned body at night, and increase sunlight exposure while avoiding it at the afternoon

#5: maintain a comfortable bedroom, with the right temperature, light and minimal noise

#6: do not eat heavy meals before bedtime. Eat just light carbohydrate

Treatment with medication includes intake of a very small amount of alcohol that can motivate relaxation and sleepiness. OTC antihistamines as remedies for colds can be means of sedation or sleeping pills but this has not shown consistency in effectively curing insomnia. There are a lot more medications like anti-depressants, melatonin, benzodiazepines and herbal medications that are found to treat insomnia but it is more important for one patient to regain how to sleep. So it is more advisable to have the non-medication treatment which is really safer and more natural way of getting back restful, long, deep sleep.

If you’re having troubles with sleeping, you most likely lose that pleasant morning-mood; you feel restless or in other words cause impairments of your daily functioning. But there is a bigger issue than that. Insomnia poses risks to your over-all health that could be considered detrimental if not acted upon.

Insomnia is characterized as the problem of not falling to sleep. There is a great difference on the physical and psychological aspect of persons who have poor quality sleep compared to those sound-sleepers. Off course, poor sleepers are the ones who are very negatively affected and will most likely acquire health risks. Studies were conducted to assess the health risks associated with poor sleepers vs sound sleepers.

The Sleep Research and Treatment Center in Penn State College of Medicine randomly selected adults in Central Pennsylvania that agreed to be examined in a sleep laboratory. After collating the data out from the questionnaires, the respondents are classified into the following:

- 70% are normal sleepers (at least 6 hours of sleep)

- 8% had chronic insomnia, with signs persisting for almost 1 year

- 22% were poor sleepers who have trouble sleeping and or staying awake a night

The findings of the sleep assessment, which is published on the sleep journal, April issue, are the following health risks:

Hypertension- those who slept five hours or less at night and had history of insomnia will have five times the tendency of having hypertension than those normal sleepers.

High blood Pressure- people will have 3.5 more tendency of acquiring this disease if have slept 5 to 6 hours a night as their usual sleeping pattern compared to normal sleepers.

But those with insomnia and still has six hours sleep has similar risks to normal sleepers, the researchers also concluded that eight to ten percent have high risks for high blood pressure attributed to chronic insomnia. Aside from these, there are psychiatric disorders that will likely occur such as depression that can really affect one’s psychological being.

Insomnia is but a serious syndrome that needs to be diagnosed or treated right away to prevent all other risks that it can trigger and that may damage the functioning of one being.

We already know that insomnia causes us several physical psychological disorders. On the other hand, some diseases can also lead to being insomniac. There are two categories of diseases or disorders that can trigger insomnia: emotional and physical disorders or illness.

Emotional disorders that can lead to insomnia will basically include depression. Worrying and thinking too much of your tedious workload or perhaps your personal problem makes you restless especially during the night. Some people suffering from this will choose to take sleeping pills which is not the proper solution, although it can cure insomnia for a night. Worst emotional disorders that can also cause conditioned insomnia are anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. Actually, those that have acquired insomnia from different factors will most likely have these emotional disorders as a result of restless sleep. In other words, Insomnia and emotional disorders will result to each other vise versa.

There are several physical disorders that can lead to insomnia. Most are those diseases that cause much pain and then cause one to suffer it during the night therefore preventing it from restful sleep. The unhealthy conditions are as follows:

Arthritis, fibromyalgia, headaches and other chronic pain-causing conditions, especially those that can trigger centralized body pain would definitely prevent one’s sleep

Asthma and heart diseases can make one’s breathing difficult, another factor of sleeplessness.

Gastrointestinal disorders like heartburn

When one is suffering from stroke

Restless Leg Syndrome or the disorder when one had heavy workload during the day and feels the leg jerking at night which is really painful.

Menopausal stage for women is another common health factor that cases restlessness for women especially at night.

Insomnia should be treated right away in order to prevent other illness that can take effect because of it. Treating it is simply dealing with the above mentioned causes that you think you have to cease the sleeping problem. Better yet, consult your doctor for proper diagnosis of insomnia. Studies have been continually conducted to further improve solutions to insomnia conditions. It is also good to be consistently updated with health tips to prevent aggravating health disorders in general.

If you find yourself counting millions of sheep before falling asleep for quite a longer period now, you are having conditioned insomnia. This is also defined as the constant problem of trouble sleeping that will last for at least six months. This continuous restless sleep disorder will not do any good on your health or your total being. Failure to treat this problem would pose detrimental illness.

Insomnia is caused by a variety of factors such as the heavy workload that may also cause restless leg syndrome, uncomfortable sleeping environment and other stress-related factors. If not treated or diagnosed correctly, insomnia have these negative effects:

Shift work

When you have continuous sleeplessness, your body tends to adjust its clock and rhythm of working. Because your body is disturbed from abnormal sleeping pattern, your body’s routine activities would eventually be moved of its timing.

Poor concentration and judgment

Having lack of sleep at night means not having the enough rest your mind and body needs. It is through sleep that your body could rejuvenate. Without restful sleep will tire the mind and body. Your reaction-time will also be poor, so you can not respond directly to abrupt situations. Horrible example would be traffic accidents due to sleepy drivers.

Depression

When you don’t get enough sleep you will likely have headaches and chronic pain in the body. These stress-related conditions often lead to depression. About ninety percent if insomnia sufferers are also suffering from depression.

Ageing

When you lack sleep, you do not get the chance for body rejuvenation and detoxification. Then you start having those unwanted face wrinkles. Premature ageing is another term for this effect.

Other physical Illness

Hypertension and high blood pressure are just few of the possible detrimental health effects of conditioned insomnia. There had been studies conducted and concluded about the correlation between these diseases and insomnia.

It is very important that you get to know why you are having insomnia and determine the real cause of it so that you will know how to diagnose it. Treatment methods also vary from person to person because people may have different factors of acquiring insomnia.

Did you know that more than half of traffic accidents in America are because of drowsy drivers? What keeps them busy is due to lack of night’s sleep. That can be attributed to insomnia. See how it affects one’s daily functioning. It’s a serious matter that needs to be acted immediately. Car accidents are just one possible impact of insomnia that it impairs reaction-time in situations as well as memory and judgment.

Insomnia could very detrimental one’s over-all health. Disorientation and irritability are just minor psychological impacts. What is more alarming are the hypertension and high-blood pressure risks and severe emotional disorders such as depression or worst could be anxiety. Insomnia and depression could actually cause each other vise versa. There is a need to see a physician in order to cease insomnia and determine whether it is short-term or chronic. Treatments depend on the category of insomnia and the type of person suffering from it. One could go on medication or the non-medication type of treatment.

However, there is one misconception about treatment. Some insomnia sufferers treat their problem by drinking alcohol for it helps them get sleepy. But taking large amounts of it is not good anymore. It actually worsens the problem. It is just a little amount of alcohol that a body needs to encourage relaxation. Drug-dependency is one serious problem that could accompany insomnia.

Insomnia is prolonged could also lead to premature aging. When you lack sleep, you do not get the chance for body rejuvenation and detoxification, which is why you’ll have that skin wrinkles which is one common sign of aging.

Breast cancer is another serious risk, why? Melatonin, a body hormone, works during night to combat abnormal cell growth. Failure of body to release this hormone increases women’s tendency to breast cancer according to an article on Washingtonpost.com (2005). Night-shift jobs are not advisable for women.

Now let us talk about cortisol, an anti-inflammatory in the body. It is released during the day and stops natural call repair. Sleeping lowers cortisol levels, thus allowing natural cell repair. So if you lack sleep, you are allowing levels of cortisol production in the body, which has negative effect.

Insomnia, indeed could be very detrimental to over-all health. If you have severe trouble sleeping better have remedies or treatments right away to prevent physical and psychological risks from devastating you.

You just cannot let yourself suffer from prolonged sleeping difficulty. Counting the sheep won’t help that much in regaining a normal sleep pattern. That makes you irritable when you wake in the morning and lack the concentration on your daily activities. Moreover, you can acquire health risks due to your abnormal sleeping pattern or insomnia. You need to cope-up with insomnia in order to get along with the pace of your daily life. If not, you will be suffering in the long run.

Coping mechanisms will play an important role in dealing with insomnia problem. Do not just frown over sleepless nights; you have to do something to get back your body to normal sleeping pattern.

Coping is like trial and error experimentation but with patience and diligence in applying the mechanisms, you’ll surely get yourself the restful, deep and enough sleep.

Step 1: Get to know your insomnia problem. Disorders or syndrome vary from person to person and so as to treatments or methods to be used in ceasing insomnia. One treatment may not work well for an individual because of not diagnosing the insomnia problem very well. You have to determine whether it is transient, short-term or chronic insomnia in order to appropriately treat the problem.

Step 2: Adjust your sleeping pattern. Insomnia could be triggered by change of sleeping environment or perhaps uncomfortable bedroom, and then you better make adjustments around you to lessen the uneasiness and find that simple comfort you want. Make sure your room is dark if you much prefer it. Have the right room temperature and as much as possible make sure your mattress and pillow is comfortable.

Step 3: Have a sleep journal. It’s good to keep a record of your nightly sleeping pattern if insomnia symptoms still persist. That record can serve as basis to examine the level of your sleeping disorder. A physician can also help you analyze that one.

Step 4: Relax in a natural way. Meditation and aromatherapy could be means of coping with insomnia. These will help the body relax from stress and anxieties which are great factors of sleeplessness.

Step 5: Avoid stimulating activities before sleep. Watching tv, drinking coffee, exercising before bedtime, would not easily get you to sleep at night.

Hypertension- those who slept five hours or less at night and had history of insomnia will have five times the tendency of having hypertension than those normal sleepers

High blood Pressure- people will have 3.5 more tendency of acquiring this disease if have slept 5 to 6 hours a night as their usual sleeping pattern compared to normal sleepers
