There is nothing more frustrating than the inability to sleep, even when you desperately want and need to. No matter how tired you are, it can often feel like an alarm goes off in your head the second you close your eyes.
The best and most effective way to battle insomnia is to closely examine the cause. This may be something as simple as looking into snoring solutions for your spouse or it may mean going so far as to looking to participating in a sleep study to determine the a true diagnosis. Once you discover the reason for your sleeplessness, you can take active steps to alleviate it.
Five steps to help you sleep.
- Maintain a routine at bedtime in order to prepare yourself for sleep. Whatever the routine is, try not to deviate from it as the hope is that you will train your body and mind to be ready for sleep through repetition.
- Set up your room in a manner that is conducive to sleep. Try to get rid of any distractions such as noise or light so that your room is calm quiet and dark.
- If you can’t sleep because your spouse won’t stop snoring or tosses and turns in bed, consider going to bed about an hour before they do so that you are already asleep when they come to bed.
- Don’t go to bed on an empty stomach and this doesn’t mean you should eat a giant plate of pasta before you turn in every night. A large glass of milk or a small bowl of yogurt or cereal should do the trick.
- Avoid stimulants well before bedtime. Coffee, tea or pop have a great deal of caffeine in them so make sure that you don’t consume any at least 4 hours before you intend to sleep.
Recognizing why you have difficulty sleeping is always the best place to start trying to address the problem. Whether you exercise in the evening to tire yourself out or do yoga in order to put yourself in a calm and relaxed state, there are many options for you to look into. If the problem persists or begins to negatively impact your waking hours, you may need to look into a professional opinion or resolution such as medication. Either way, sleep is essential so making sure you get enough of it should be priority one.
